A Note From the Artist
This drawing is my personal favorite. I made it just after finishing a large, elaborate piece and wanted to make something small and simple, just for myself. I let myself indulge in the details and colors of these unripe lemons from my garden, with no deadline or commission behind it. I just drew it for the love of drawing, and I can still feel that every time I look at it.

A Note From the Artist
This was the first piece I made with a pastel background, and I’ve been incorporating pastels into my work ever since. I used the pastel to create the soft blue background and the shadows beneath the persimmons, which gave the drawing a sense of atmosphere without adding a specific setting or context. It was a breakthrough piece for me, showing me how much a simple pastel background could do within a limited composition.

A Note From the Artist
I named this piece Isabel after my next-door neighbor growing up, who was like a grandmother to me. She was a lovely, patient, and kind person, and I found myself thinking of her as I built the delicate colors and soft layers of these peonies. I love the nearly monochromatic palette and the contrast between the full, luminous blooms and the slender vase.

A Note From the Artist
These apples came from Eric, my husband’s next-door neighbor growing up. He offered to let me pick some apples from his tree for a drawing, and I think of him every time I see this piece. I love rendering fruit and flowers against a simple background, allowing their individual shapes, colors, and details to become the focus. It almost shifts the drawing from a still life into a portrait of the fruit.

I loved creating this piece from the very beginning. I grew the roses in my garden and made the ceramic vase, so it feels especially personal to me. I was drawn to the soft light and the subtle colors that emerge from the mostly white roses, contrasted against the smooth, simple form of the vase.

A Note From the Artist
This piece was created for my first solo exhibition at Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. I was drawn to the combination of the vivid orange dahlia and the saturated teal vase, and loved the way the two colors play against each other. The flower itself has so much personality, with its twisting, irregular petals, and I enjoyed letting that character come through in the drawing.

A Note From the Artist
This rose came from a bush in my garden that mostly produces white roses. Every once in a while, though, I find one with a hint of peach or pink, and those unexpected colors always feel special. I wanted to create something simple and vibrant from this particular rose, so I paired its soft colors with a bright blue bud vase.

A Note From the Artist
This piece is part of my garden rose series, drawn from a rose in my garden and a vase I made for the series. White subjects can be surprisingly challenging to draw — the rose appears white, but its petals contain almost every color, from cool blues and violets to warm yellows and pinks. I love looking closely enough to find all of those subtle colors within the petals.

A Note From the Artist
This was the first drawing I made in my garden rose series. It’s also the first piece that was truly made from scratch — I handmade the vase, grew the rose, built the composition, and created the drawing. There’s something especially satisfying about having a hand in every part of the process. I love the simplicity of this one — the minimal composition, the soft colors, and the way the light falls across the rose and vase.

A Note From the Artist
I drew this piece for Saatchi Gallery’s FLOWERS – FLORA IN CONTEMPORARY ART & CULTURE exhibition in London. I wanted to create something dramatic and intense while keeping the composition simple, so I chose magenta dahlias for their vibrant color and silver brunia for their unusual forms. I loved the way the bright flowers emerged from the darkness, creating a piece that feels both bold and intimate.

A Note From the Artist
My mother-in-law grows alstroemeria in her garden, and I never fully appreciated them until I saw them growing so heartily there. Growing up, I saw them everywhere — in grocery store bouquets, year-round — and they never struck me as particularly special. Seeing them in her garden, though, I noticed how vibrant, happy, and hearty they are. The flowers in this drawing came from her garden, and the drawing always reminds me of her and the happiness of her home.

I loved the way the soft light moved across the petals and brought out subtle shifts in the whites and greens. Most of the botanical subjects I draw are organic, soft, and rounded, so for this piece I wanted to introduce something with a different kind of form. I was drawn to the angles and geometric shape of this watering can, and to the way its quiet gray tones contrast with the soft, billowy pink peony.

A Note From the Artist
This was my first black-and-white colored pencil drawing. The original setup was very colorful, with yellow tulips in a green vase, but removing the color helped to focus the composition and ultimately made the drawing stronger. I loved creating it. The drama of the dark background and the beautiful light on the tulips give it a quality that feels different from the rest of my work, and it remains one of the more unique drawings in my portfolio.

I made this piece during a time when I was missing the experience of drawing figures, and this vase gave me a way to bring some of that interest in the human form into my botanical work. I loved paying attention to the subtle shifts in light across the vase, and how those changes describe the form. The bright alstroemeria also gave me a beautiful contrast against the gray tones of the figure.

I couldn’t help but buy these Sarracenia at the flower market. I don’t often work with flowers or vases with such elaborate designs, as I’m usually drawn to minimalism and simplicity, but these flowers and patterned vase worked beautifully together — especially in the warm natural light by the window. I ended up loving the challenge of rendering all of the intricate patterns, and it’s one of my favorite drawings to date.

I'm drawn to the simplicity of ikebana arrangements. For this piece, I wanted to explore what could be achieved with just a few carefully chosen elements. After some experimentation, I ended up with this arrangement of a single orchid paired with a long, curving stick. This was the featured image for my first solo exhibit at Dolby Chadwick Gallery.

A Note From the Artist
I made this piece during a period when I was missing figure and portrait drawing, and wanted to bring some of that sensibility into my botanical work. I was immediately drawn to this figure-shaped vase and the way its form gave the flowers an entirely different presence. Hellebores droop so easily that getting the stems to fall just right became a challenge — I eventually tied a string around the stem and taped it to the ceiling to hold the flowers in place. I loved the subtle shifts in color and the way the flowers seemed to echo the graceful form of the vase.

A Note From the Studio
I love how unexpected this combination is — a figure vase, a stem of kumquats, and a brick. I’ve always loved kumquats but had never drawn them before, and I liked the idea of pairing their small, bright forms with the strength and presence of the figure vase. This was the second time I used this vase in a drawing, and I think it has a completely different personality here. Against the black background, the figure almost seems to emerge from the darkness, standing confidently on her brick pedestal with a burst of kumquats growing from her.

To me, this piece is all about the light. I had photographed it throughout the day, experimenting with everything from morning light to direct sunlight to softer, more muted light. It wasn’t until the sun started to set that it felt magical, with the very beginnings of the sunset reflected in the vase and across the table, mirroring the colors of the orange flower and bringing the whole piece together.

It took lots of experimentation to arrive at this composition. I loved the flower and the knobby stem, but I couldn’t find a way to make it work for a drawing. I tried it in vases, suspended in mid-air, and lying on its side, but nothing felt right. Just as the sun was beginning to set, I turned the flower upside down, and the composition came together.
